Let's be honest, the plotline where the fat girl gets a chance with her hot friend when he offers her a practice pity romance has been done time and again. So, if you're going to do it, you'd better do it well. That wasn't the case here. I'm a plus-sized woman and I'm all about representation and body positivity. In my opinion, plus-sized heroines need a few things:1. A good amount of growth in overcoming their insecurities. In the case of Freya, she spent nearly the entire book self-deprecating until one day she got mad enough and just got over it. Nope. Not buying it.2. Brains. It's great that Freya was beautiful regardless of her size but we're actually expected to believe that she is about to be 30 and has no knowledge of sexual acts or terminology whatsoever. 30 years old and she's never read a romance novel or done a Google search? Again, not buying it.3. Personality. Freya is completely awkward and unable to talk to men EXCEPT old men, when she apparently turns into the dazzling and charming life of the party. Suddenly she's witty and everyone loves her. She spends most of the book not even being truthful with her best friends.Leaving aside the missing growth, brains, and personality, the story just never seemed to go anywhere. I was exceedingly bored and it took me 10 days of stopping and starting to finish a book that normally would've taken me 3-4 hours. I just couldn't find a reason to care about any of it, nor could I get past the horrible version of what the author thinks passes for British and Scottish speech/slang. As others on Goodreads have pointed out, the term is "bloody hell". No one in the UK says "bleddy". Freya repeatedly calls Mac a cow, yet that term is actually slang used to describe another woman. And, for the love of God, it takes more than using the word "wee" over and over to make someone sound Scottish. The dialogue made them all sound like characters from The Simpsons.This was my first book by this author and it will most likely be my last. Thank goodness I borrowed this with KU instead of spending money on it. I'm not sure why Amy loves transporting us overseas BUT I enjoy every trip.Mac and Freya were the quintessential best friends. Always spending time together and giving their friends the idea they were really 'Netflix and chilling' even though they weren't.It was interesting to see the roles reversed, the whole time they hung out it was Mac hoping for more from Freya. I think so many full figured women don't think their beautiful because society often values a lot of beauty based on the number on the scale. But that's not Mac and Freya has the hardest time understanding that. Mac doesn't give up and I'm so grateful he allowed himself to love her, even when he acted like an ass. The things we do for those we love can often 'blindside' us, but all that really matters is the path to happiness in the end. Great pickup.
